Cycling Star Tom Boonen trusts RadarLock
My name is Kiko Garcia, and I’m the Sports Marketing Manager for Oakley.
On 31st of March 2012 I had a mission:
I travelled to Belgium for one of the most exciting cycling events of the season, the Tour of Flanders. The Tour of Flanders is know to be one of the most beautiful cycling races of the world, with a very hard combination of steep climbs and daring cobblestones.
My goal was to give the new RadarLock™ performance glasses to one of our team riders to win the Tour of Flanders with it.
Tom Boonen is probably the most popular athlete in Belgium and had started the season in fantastic shape, with a victory at the Tour of Qatar, a stage victory in Paris-Nice and winning the classic Gent-Wevelgem race. We knew winning the Tour of Flanders was one of Tom’s main goals of the season, so I visited him in his team hotel the day before of the race.
When I showed him the different brand new RadarLock™ models to potentially choose one for the race, Tom instantly fell in love with the Matte Glacier/Black Iridium RadarLock™. I immediately saw the happiness on his face and I knew he would able to achieve something very special wearing these new glasses during the race the next day.
24 hours later Tom was at the start line in Bruges, wearing his new RadarLock™.
Six hours and 30 minutes later he triumphantly crossed the finish line, winning the race with a spectacular performance!
The media frenzy was crazy and the next day all the Belgian newspapers featured Tom on the front cover. Mission one accomplished.
And the success story continued:
Some athletes are a little bit superstitious and if they win a big competition wearing a new piece of equipment, they keep using the same piece as a good luck charm all the time.
So when Tom won the Tour of Flanders with the new RadarLock™, he decided instantly to use them again for the Paris-Roubaix competition a week later.
His good luck charm worked: Tom won Paris-Roubaix with a fantastic solo performance: His solo ride during the last 50 kilometres of the race will be forever part of the history of the Paris-Roubaix race!
